The Scottish Government published its Coronavirus (COVID-19): framework for decision making – Scotland’s route map through and out of the crisis on 21st May 2020, setting out a provisional four-phase plan to relax many of the restrictions that have existed during lockdown. Phase 1 of the route map, which is to be implemented from 28th May, allows for the playing of tennis outdoors subject to certain overriding restrictions in relation to social distancing and public hygiene.
The LTA, through Tennis Scotland, issued guidance on 22nd May for how venues and players could safely resume play in accordance with the Scottish Government’s route map, and subsequently updated and clarified their position with updated guidance on 28th May.
These Kinghorn Tennis Club Guidelines for Resuming Play set out the arrangements for allowing the resumption of tennis at our Club during the Scottish Government’s ‘route map’ Phase 1 period. They apply throughout the Phase 1 period and will be revised in due course in line with the Scottish Government’s transition to Phase 2 of the ‘route map’.
The Guidelines, which may be subject to amendment at any time, have been written with the best interests of the membership at heart and all players are requested to adhere to them.
The outer access gate will remain locked at all times using a combination padlock. One of the conditions for re-opening is the ability to control numbers participating at any one time, and therefore during Phase 1 there will be no access to the courts for non-Members.
Members can only access the courts by pre-booking times using on-line booking system. Please contact the Club Secretary at firstname.lastname@example.org for a link to the on-line booking system.
Members can play with non-members from within their own household, subject to payment of the non-member fee of £2 per person per hour, payable in cash through the clubhouse door or preferably by BACs transfer (see Membership Subscriptions for Bank details).
The clubhouse will remain out-of-bounds throughout the Phase 1 period and therefore there is no access to toilet, kitchen, changing, first aid, equipment or any other clubhouse facilities.
A maximum of 4 people at any one time may access the courts for the purposes of:
- Practising tennis: up to 2 people on their own, one on each court; or
- Singles tennis: 2 people (not necessarily from the same household) per court; or
- Doubles tennis: 4 people from up to two different households on one court (doubles pairings must be from the same household); or
- Coaching: one on one coaching on one court.
Guidelines for Allowable Play
Whilst using Club facilities, all participants are requested to comply with the following guidelines:
- Maintain social distancing at all times and respect other people’s personal space.
- Bring your own equipment, including balls that are clearly marked as belonging to you.
- Bring your own hand sanitizer and use it before and after accessing the courts.
- Close the outer gate behind you at all times.
- Leave the inner gate open at all times (including during play).
- Leave the courts promptly at the allotted time, taking all equipment, balls, personal belongings and rubbish with you.
- Inform non-members turning up at the courts of these Guidelines and refer them to the notices provided at the outer gate.
- Contact a Committee member if non-members attempt to access the courts.
- Wash your hands thoroughly as soon as possible after visiting the courts.
- Visit the courts if you or anyone in your household is showing signs of Coronavirus.
- Move between courts or change ends.
- Touch balls belonging to others.
- Arrive at the courts before your allotted time, or stay after your allotted time.
- Congregate with others before, during or after play.
- Close contact with others whilst on court.
- Touching any of the permanent touchpoints such as gates, fencing, net posts, nets etc.
- Using your hands to pick up tennis balls that aren’t yours – use your racquet/foot to hit/kick balls back to your opponent.
- Confrontation – speak to a Committee member if you have any concerns.
Health, Safety and Hygiene
The above guidelines are aimed at providing as far as is practicable a safe environment for the playing of tennis. However, no environment will be completely risk free and therefore players are responsible for undertaking their own risk assessments and making their own arrangements prior to accessing the courts. These should include such things as the use of balls, handling of balls, cleaning of touchpoints, the wearing of personal protective equipment, and first aid provision. Whilst the club house remains inaccessible, the club will not be providing any sanitiser for members use.
In relation to balls, the Club has purchased a quantity of new Dunlop All Court, as well as Mini-Red balls which can be purchased by Members at attractive rates. Please contact either the Treasurer or President for further details.
The Club is run by a Committee of volunteers, and so has very limited ability to clean any of the Club’s facilities, equipment or infrastructure. Whilst the Committee will endeavour to wipe down common touchpoints such as the padlock and access gates weekly, this cannot be guaranteed and players should make their own arrangements for cleaning surfaces before and after touching them, including considering the use of disposal gloves. In all regards, players use the facilities at their own risk.
