June is always a busy month for tennis – the French Open gets underway, we start to think about Queens and Wimbledon, how the Brits will fare and who will be winning the silverware this year. And on a somewhat smaller stage it feels quite similar at Kinghorn Tennis Club, especially as another three of our trophies have been competed for. At the end of May we held our Open Doubles tournament. Seven pairs competed in glorious warm sunshine (again!) with everyone enjoying both highs and lows throughout the course of a very long afternoon. Brian and Fiona started strong and then faded away, whilst Oliver and Joanna played very well after having got off to a slow start. Some pairs struggled to find their usual form, whilst Ewen and Kerry (the bookies favourite) took command of most games, apart from a surprise defeat at the hands of Robert and Linda. The final came down to Ewen and Kerry versus Henry and Lesley, and despite a valiant post-Black Rock 5 effort from Henry and gutsy endeavour from Lesley, it was Ewen and Kerry who ran out 6 – 2 winners. In 2nd June it was the turn of the younger juniors, and despite the forecast we again enjoyed a warm and sunny afternoon for the ‘Little and Large’ adult/child doubles and the Junior Singles competitions. The focus was very much on fun and friendly competition, which was certainly the case; in all we had about 30 players and spectators who enjoyed the afternoon which included a BBQ and ice lollies. Congratulations to ‘Little and Large’ winners James Page and Gemma Thompson, and runners-up Alice and Damian Purcell. In the Junior Singles final, Sarah Purcell rallied really well against Harry Mason, but Harry’s powerful serve had the edge, with Harry running out 7 – 5, 8 - 6 winner and taking the Junior Singles title for 2018. And let’s not forget to mention Gemma and Fiona who put on a great afternoon of fun tennis. There are also a few dates for the diary that you might want to take a note of. Firstly, on Saturday 23rd June we’ll be holding our ever-popular Family Fun Day, which is free to all members, so why not come along and enjoy some fun games on-court (for both juniors and seniors), numerous stalls and a BBQ. The fun starts at 1pm and further details will be posted in the clubhouse. The following day, Sunday 24th June, sees the Library holding a Car Boot Sale and we will be supporting that by taking a table, with all proceeds going to Tennis Club funds. If you have anything you can donate or would like to help out at either the car boot sale of the Family Fun Day, please contact Gillian as soon as possible. And finally, the inaugural Mens Doubles tournament will be held on Sunday 8th July – see the noticeboard in the clubhouse for further details. June also sees the start of the Russia 2018 World Cup, so what better way to participate in the excitement than taking part in our World Cup Sweep. There are great prizes to be won and all profits will go to Club funds. There are only 32 teams so if you want to participate see me as soon as possible as teams will be sold from 3rd June on a first-come-first-served basis. John Brennan - Club President | |
