Welcome everyone to this first newsletter of the 2018 tennis season, which has now officially well and truly started. So, if you haven’t yet managed to get down to the courts for a game, then what are you waiting for?
There are lots of opportunities for social tennis for the adults (Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm and Sunday mornings from 9am), matchplay practice for ESLTA League level adults on a Wednesday evening from 6pm, as well a very comprehensive programme of club competitions for adults and juniors alike. And not forgetting that the older ‘yellow ball’ juniors can join the adults on a Thursday evening as well.
I mentioned club competitions and we held the first of these last Saturday, the Vets Singles, in fantastic warm sunshine – we could not have asked for a better day (especially for those of us spectating and not having to exert ourselves in the heat of the afternoon!). Nine players turned out to compete and we were treated to a demonstration of very different playing styles and shots. As ever at Kinghorn, the crowd didn’t hold back in supporting the underdog, but despite that the competition went pretty well to form, with Henry Murray and Ewen Campbell battling it out in a repeat of last year’s final. But this year Henry’s dogged persistence in running down and returning everything Ewen threw at him (which was quite a lot!) paid off and after 4 hours of very sweaty tennis Henry took the Veteran’s Singles trophy for 2018. Thanks to everyone who turned out to either play or spectate and a special thanks to our very own Mary Berry (Gillian) for the sandwich cake and scones which kept us going all afternoon.
The draw for the Open Singles tournament has been made and posted in the clubhouse. Preliminary and First Round matches are to be played by the end of May, so please get in touch with your opponent and get these matches scheduled as soon as possible. Remember that matches are to be played outwith social tennis and coaching times, and Juniors participating in the competition must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. As with all of our club competitions and events, please check the noticeboard in the clubhouse in order to keep up to date with what’s coming up.
Club Coach Nicol has resumed group coaching for both juniors and adults on a Sunday afternoon. He is also available for individual coaching, so if you want to improve any aspect of your game then just drop Nicol a message to see what he can do for you.
