Newsletter - April 2019

13/4/2019

Welcome everyone to our 2019 season, which is now well and truly underway. We’ve held our AGM, issued the membership renewal forms, hung up the new nets and now that the clocks have changed we’ve kicked off our Tues/Thurs evening social tennis sessions. So what are you waiting for? Dust off the racquet and get down to the courts for a game.
We’ve also held our first club competition of the season, the Vets Singles. Eight hardy ‘vets’ turned out last Sunday to brave the damp weather and compete for the right to look after one of our oldest club trophies, which dates back to the 1930s. If you were thinking that the Vets competition would be an easy, social afternoon of leisurely tennis you would be very much mistaken. It was a full-on four-and-a half hour test of fitness, which some of us struggled with. We were sustained with a spread of pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches and scones, which went down extremely well. Well done to Paul, Stuart and John who deserve a mention for sticking to the task; Brian and Louise for playing strongly; Linda who ran her socks off and was in contention until her last match; Martin for pushing hard for the title and finishing a strong runner-up; and Henry for battling to the end and retaining the Vets Singles title for another year. And not forgetting Fiona, Nicol, Kirsty and James for braving the weather and cheering us all on.
If playing in the Vets Singles has taught me anything it’s that I could always be fitter. And what better way of doing so than signing up for the Wednesday evening Cardio Tennis sessions which commence on Wednesday 24th April from 7.30 – 8.30pm. You can either sign up for the full 10-week block at a discount price of £45 or on a ’pay-as-you-go’ basis at a price of £6 per session. Contact Coach Nicol on nicolbrennan@hotmail.co.uk if you’re interested. The next block of Sunday afternoon coaching also commences on Sunday 28th April and again, please contact Coach Nicol for details.
Our next competitions are the Open Singles and Open Doubles. The closing date for entries to these will be the end of April so keep an eye on the noticeboard in the clubhouse for further details.
It’s also time to renew annual membership and applications forms can be found in the Clubhouse. On the rear of the form you will find a copy of our Code of Conduct, which we are required to have as part of our Registered Venue status from the LTA. Please take some time to read the Code as well as our Safeguarding and Diversity policies which can be found on the noticeboard in the Clubhouse. There are two places on the membership form which you will be required to sign – the Data Protection statement on the front side, and the agreement to uphold the Code of Conduct on the rear side. Subscriptions are due to be paid by end of April – if you have any questions regarding payment please speak to Katie or Fiona.
That’s all for now – hope to see you on court soon.
John.
