Newsletter - September 2018

It’s been a while since I put pen to paper and as a result I’m not sure where to start as there’s quite a lot to catch up on.
The most important thing is a date for the diary – Saturday 24th November for our end-of-season Dinner and Prize-Giving. We haven’t finalised on a venue as yet but it’s bound to be a great night out as well as a celebration of everything that’s good about Kinghorn Tennis Club, so be sure to set the evening aside in the diaries.
Despite the best summer most of us can remember for a very long time, we ended up cancelling a number of competitions due to the weather and the Committee are very busy at the moment in trying to shoe-horn the last of the competitions into the calendar before the end of the season. The inaugural Mens Doubles will be held on Sunday 30th September, the Mixed Doubles on Sunday 7th October and Junior + Senior Doubles on Sunday 14th October – fingers crossed for the weather!
We were much luckier with the Ladies Singles tournament, which was held on 1st September in good weather and even better spirit; eight ladies participated and we were treated to a lovely afternoon tea in the clubhouse before watching a repeat of last year’s final between Linda Bonnar and Katie Hearns, with Linda narrowly winning through and lifting the Ladies Singles trophy for a second year running. And thanks to Fiona, Louise, Lesley C, Lesley B, Judith and Mhairi for making a match of it.
And 15th September was something of a red letter day – we hosted the home leg of our long-standing and increasingly popular match versus Dalgety Bay and for the first time in several years we ran out 56 – 53 winners. It was great team effort from Kerry + Oliver, Gillian + Paul, Joanna + Andy, and Louise + Martin, the latter pairing holding on to the bitter end to bring home a long-awaited and much needed win. Thanks also to Ken, Anne, Kirsty, James, Lesley B and Margaret (not forgetting Milo!) for their support on the day.
On the social side we held our Family Fun Day & Barbeque at the end of June, which was very well attended and provided a good opportunity to not only socialise, but also to participate in some fun games and competitions on court, curtesy of Club Coach Nicol. The Chocolate Tombola went down a storm and there was a mad rush for people to try their hand at the football World Cup sweeps. Congratulations to Julia for guessing the number of sweets in the jar (again!) and the Moonie family for winning everything there was to win in the World Cup Sweeps!
The following day, a few volunteers supported the Community Centre’s fundraising efforts by manning a stall at their Car Boot Sale, with all takings going to Tennis Club funds. Many thanks to Gillian, Katie and Fiona for standing about in the sweltering sun, as well as everyone who contributed goods for the stall – we raised over £40 for club funds.
Well, I think that’s all for now. Look out for notification of the Dinner venue and how to get tickets.
John.
